The following applies to all types of work zones (construction, maintenance, surveying):
- Construction vehicles in work zones are usually large and slow moving. Stay clear of them.
- When all or part of a highway traffic lane is closed for construction, maintenance, or surveying, the speed limit is 45 mph, unless otherwise posted. In urban settings, where the speed limit is already lower, reduce your speed to 25 mph.
- The "Where workers are present" sign does not apply if there is a barrier between you and the workers.
- Fines for speeding in work zones are doubled. Violators also receive increased points against their driving record.
- When driving through highway/freeway work zones, be prepared for lane shifts or alternating lane closures.
