Trains

 Considerations for railway grade crossings:

  • The yellow railroad crossing sign warns of a railway grade crossing ahead.  It is the only traffic sign that is round in shape.
  • The "X" shaped crossbuck sign signifies that you must yield to an approaching train.
  • If a train is approaching and there is no stop line, you should stop no closer than 15 feet from the tracks.
  • When approaching a railroad crossing that has gates lowered with signals flashing and bells ringing, you should stop and wait until the gates are raised, the signals stop flashing, and bells stop ringing.
  • If you have to cross railroad tracks just before stopping at an intersection, you should stop before you cross the railroad tracks when you do not have room to completely cross the tracks.  Never stop on railroad tracks.
